What causes split ends?

Split ends happen when the ends of your hair become dry, brittle, and frayed. They may resemble the end of an unraveled rope.

Extreme weather conditions, blow drying, straightening, and curling hair may cause split ends. Split Ends can also be caused by chemical hair care products. With so many people using hair products daily, split ends are very common. Almost everyone will deal with split ends at some point in their lives.

If you’re wondering how to stop split ends, we’ve  got you covered.

Hair is surprisingly sensitive, and split ends are generally caused by rough handling. Implement these simple hair care tips and you will surely notice a difference.

Scrunchies

Have you heard? Everyone’s favorite ’90s hair trend is back!

Not only are scrunchies a fun way to express your personal taste and style, they’re also much more gentle on your hair than regular hair ties. The soft fabric of a scrunchie is much less likely to pull and break your individual hair strands. Which makes them them not only cute but functional and awesome for split end prevention. So the next time you need to tie up your hair, grab a scrunchie instead of a rubber band! You can even find some cute trendy ones in our boutique!

A good brush & a wide-tooth comb

Did you know that you need the right type of brush for your hair.

Right after washing your hair, you want to avoid brushing completely. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle those strands. Wide tooth combs require you to brush slower with out breaking or ripping through your hair quickly.

Skip the Shampoo

Washing your hair too much can strip it of its natural oils, causing your hair to become dry, or over produce oil. By washing your hair every other day, you can maintain healthier hair and protect it from drying out which causes split ends.

Leave-in conditioner

Your hair needs moisture in order to stay healthy and strong. Leave-in conditioners, are used after you wash your hair and before you style it. They’re usually applied to towel-dried hair.

Unlike traditional conditioners, they’re not washed out. Leave-in products provide extra moisture to the hair, protect it from damage, and help detangle the strands.

Nearly every hair type — curly or straight, natural or color-treated — can benefit from the use of leave-in conditioners, but you may find them particularly useful if you have dry, damaged, or frizzy hair. They may also be helpful if you use heat-styling tools like curling or straightening irons.

Regular trims

It seems counter-intuitive if you’re trying to keep your hair long, but regular cuts (every 6-8 weeks) are truly the secret to keeping split ends at bay. By getting those ends snipped before they become too problematic, you prevent them from splitting any further, which means you’re actually protecting that length you’ve worked so hard for! So gain your hairdresser’s utmost respect and keep up those regular appointments.

Cut back on heat

It’s no secret that heat is your hair’s worst enemy. Scorching hot showers, hair dryers, curling irons and straighteners all contribute to unhappy hair. It’s unrealistic to tell suggest to avoid all heated hair tools altogether, but keeping that heat to a minimum. Always make sure your hair is 100% dry before using curlers and straighteners. And instead of grabbing that blow dryer fresh out of the shower, let your hair dry about 80% before finishing it off. Protect your hair with a good heat protecting spray as an extra layer of protection before you add heat to your hair.

The bottom line

In general, split ends can impact the look of your hair and, left unmanaged, cause hair damage over the long term.

When it comes to split ends, prevention is key. Although you might have no intention of eliminating your styling tools, using them a little less and keeping your hair well-conditioned may help prevent hair breakage. Don’t forget to keep your regular hair appointments to keep those ends looking fresh always!
