How to prevent your hair color from fading
One of the most asked questions I get as a stylist is: How do I prevent my hair color from fading.
I’d like to begin letting you know that there are so many variations in hair types. Each person has a different hair density, thickness and weight. Which means when stylists color hair, depending on the type of hair it will bond to hair differently. Since every hair type is unique, some types of hair will hold color longer than others.
Our first tip for healthy hair is to not wash your hair every day. Washing your hair every day can strip it from its natural oils. Heavy shampoos with sulfates can also create buildup and cause your color to be lifted away quicker. If you have to wash your hair try doing a conditioner only wash and save the shampooing for every other day.
A little about hair dyes: Different pigments also hold color better than others. Red color molecules are a lot larger than other color molecules and because of this, Red tones often fade faster than other colors as well. If you’re looking for a bold color, like green, blue, purple… or something like that, keep in mind that these don’t come in a permanent form so over time the color will fade. For an overall answer to the question, there are a few things you can do to keep your color from fading.
As a stylist one of the first things you can do is to only wash your hair in warm water. Washing your hair with hot water will open your hair cuticle allowing color molecules to escape. Hot water can also damage your hair. Damaged hair will not hold color as well as healthy hair. So when you are getting your hair colored, don’t rush the process. Every time you go to the salon your hair will lift a little bit more allowing it to get lighter without damaging your follicles.
A great way to keep your color looking fresh in between color appointments is to use color depositing shampoos or rinses. As your stylist what they recommend. While this won’t offer you a permanent fix, it will keep things looking fresh in the meanwhile.
So let’s go over this again. 1.) Don’t wash your hair every day. 2.) Don’t wash your hair with super hot water 3.) Use a color depositing rinse. We hope this post was helpful for healthy hair color maintenance!
